Democracy is

the future

The Hannah Arendt Network on Democratic Resilience and Renewal is a European network that unites the world’s leading Hannah Arendt centres and institutes around a shared purpose: strengthening democracy and renewing it for our time. Announced in June 2024 in Warsaw during the Belgian EU Presidency and formally launched on 23 May 2025 at the Egmont Palace in Brussels, with the support of the Egmont Institute, the network is coordinated from the Hannah Arendt Institute in Mechelen.

“If we are to save democracy from ourselves, we have to omit what has become superfluous, to draw a line between what is real and what is mere appearance.”Hannah Arendt

The initiative

Our mission is to establish and nurture a dynamic European network committed to strengthening democratic resilience and renewal. Through collaboration, education and advocacy, we empower individuals and communities across Europe to actively safeguard democratic values and institutions.

The network was founded by four existing Hannah Arendt centres — in Mechelen (Belgium), Annandale-on-Hudson (New York), Dresden (Germany) and Verona (Italy) — and is coordinated from the Hannah Arendt Institute in Mechelen.

The ideas behind it

Drawing on Arendt’s thought, we place critical thinking, active citizenship, public engagement and the vitality of political action at the heart of our work. Embracing her emphasis on plurality, we celebrate the diversity of voices and perspectives within the network, and we uphold public space as a forum for dialogue, deliberation and freedom.

Following Merkel and Lührmann, we understand democratic resilience as the ability of a democracy—its institutions, actors and citizens—to withstand autocratic pressure by adapting without losing its democratic character. We work to foster that resilience across four levels: civil society, democratic institutions, public administration and the media. By supporting the (re-)pluralization of democratic debate, we oppose anti-pluralism and autocratization and open the way to democratic renewal.

Levels of engagement

  • Founding members — the four existing Hannah Arendt centres dedicated to preserving and promoting Arendt’s legacy.
  • Mission-aligned organizations — public and civil-society organizations committed to liberal democratic values, democratic renewal and resilience against anti-pluralist movements, at home and across the EU.
  • Supportive but independent organizations — partners who contribute to the pluralization of democratic debate, including those who challenge us to rethink and renew democratic leadership and institutions.

What we want to do

We bring these organizations together in working groups at the intersection of democracy and the topics that matter to our members — for example “Democracy and Police” or “Democracy and Migration.” Guided by a collective-impact approach, our activities include:

  • Capacity-building — training, mentorship and networking that equip people and organizations to advocate for democratic values.
  • International exchange — study visits, conferences and collaborative projects that share best practices across borders.
  • Educational workshops and seminars — on media literacy, critical thinking and active citizenship.
  • Community dialogues and forums — town halls and public debates where citizens exchange ideas on pressing social and political issues.

Join the network

You do not have to be a Hannah Arendt centre to take part. We welcome public institutions, civil-society organizations and independent partners who endorse our manifesto and want to help strengthen democratic resilience and renewal across Europe.
